The Cleveland Browns were able to pry wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. away from the New York Giants earlier this week in exchange for a first-round pick, a third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers, but they almost got more from the San Francisco 49ers.
Like the Browns, the 49ers were reportedly in contact with the Giants on multiple occasions, desperately trying to secure a deal for one of the league’s biggest superstars.
However, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports and The Athletic reports that San Francisco was unwilling to part with the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which was ultimately their undoing.
“The 49ers were in several different times,” Glazer wrote in The Athletic. “They tried during the season and they tried here in the offseason. Someone with the Giants told me they were asking for the second pick of the draft from the 49ers, which the 49ers weren’t willing to do.”
Instead of No. 2 overall — a pick that could have put the Giants in prime position to select Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray — New York walked away with No. 17 overall and No. 95 overall, as well as the aforementioned...
