Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler apparently found out shortly before Super LII that he was not going to get the start, and was seen teary-eyed pre-game on the sidelines.
The reason for Butler’s benching has drawn wide speculation, but there has been no concrete answer for coach Bill Belichick’s decision apart from he has always marched to the beat of his own drum.
Some have speculated that Butler did something wrong before the game, while others have postulated that is a contract move by Belichick considering Butler is set to be a free agent. Whatever the reasoning, the pending free agent is almost certain to not return to New England, which begs the question, should the Raiders consider scooping Butler up?
Oakland had arguably the worst secondary in the NFL in 2017, not registering an interception until after 10 games and seeing their top two cornerbacks fall flat on their faces in David Amerson and Sean Smith.
