Short of trading up, the Cowboys don’t have a lot of control over who will be available for them to select in the first round of April’s draft. Even with the festivities in Dallas, there’s not much the team can do to rig things and change the free will of the 18 teams ahead of them to select guys who would otherwise be picked on Day 3. Yet there is one thing that will universally help Dallas.
If many of the top quarterback targets go early in the draft, it will benefit the Cowboys. Without a need there, quarterbacks selected early mean more options at positions they are targeting. For years we’ve touted the draft strategy Dallas employs as BPAPN, or best player available at a position of need. ESPN draft expert Todd McShay sets the table for the Cowboys nicely in his second mock draft of the season. He thinks four quarterbacks will go in the Top 6.
