Stephon Gilmore has remained mostly under the radar since joining the New England Patriots in 2017, but he’s recently worked his way into headlines by throwing shade at Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey over his incessant trash-talking.
“I mean, it’s his personality, you know. It’s not my style. But, a lot of guys that talk are mostly zone guys, so they have a lot of energy to do that,” Gilmore told Boston’s 98.5 The Sports Hub on Wednesday.
He expanded on the point later that day in the locker room.
“You have a little bit more energy when you are playing zone,” he told WEEI.com. “You don’t really have a guy you’re lining up against, so it’s just how it is.”
“No, I think he is a good player, don’t get me wrong. But it is easier to talk when you’re doing that.”
The next day at Jaguars practice, Ramsey was asked about Gilmore’s comments, and he eschewed his usual dramatics. In fact, he was practically dismissive.
