Indianapolis Colts head athletic trainer Dave Hammer, who has been with the organization for almost four decades, was the 2018 recipient of the Fain Cain Memorial Award, the team announced Thursday.
The Fain Cain Memorial Award, which was presented to Hammer at the NFL Team Physicians Scientific Meeting and Symposia during the NFL Combine, represents the NFL’s best in athletic training.
“It was definitely a very unexpected surprise,” Hammer said, via the team’s website.
Hammer joined the Baltimore Colts in 1981 during the summer and then was named assistant athletic trainer ahead of the 1984 season. He was promoted to associate head athletic trainer in 2006 before becoming the head athletic trainer for the organization in 2009.
“No individual award — in a team-oriented sport at least — is accomplished without great people working around them,” Hammer said. “All our assistants, interns and doctors have played a part in this. It also is extremely beneficial to work in an organization that has so many good people to work with and a loyal, supportive management and ownership.”
