Atlanta Hawks officially waive Thomas Robinson, R.J. Hunter, C.J. Anderson

After a preseason in which neither played a prominent role for the Atlanta Hawks, all signs pointed to both Thomas Robinson and R.J. Hunter being waived by an organization that already employs 15 players on guaranteed contracts and two players (Jaylen Adams and Alex Poythress) on two-way deals. On Saturday morning, that became official, as the Hawks announced that Robinson, Hunter and C.J. Anderson were officially waived.

At the outset, it appeared at least possible that Robinson would have a chance to make Atlanta’s roster, particularly given the team’s injuries and lack of frontcourt depth. However, the former No. 5 overall pick appeared in only limited duty in three preseason games, leaving very little room to make an on-court impression.

Hunter’s path to the roster was always less clear, even amid an interesting narrative of his return to Atlanta after an outstanding career at Georgia State. Like Robinson, Hunter appeared in only three games, largely in mop-up duty, and it is important to note that the Erie BayHawks traded for his G League rights in early September, perhaps paving the way for an appearance on that roster in the near future....
