Report: Falcons made last-ditch effort to keep Kyle Shanahan

Lost in all of last week’s Josh McDaniels ghosting the Colts story was a little nugget dropped from ESPN’s Adam Schefter about Kyle Shanahan’s decision to leave Atlanta after last season.

Talking to a San Francisco radio station — KNBR — Schefter spoke of a similar hesitancy from Shanahan to stay in Atlanta rather than take the 49ers job – per David Fucillo at Niners Nation.

Last year, I don’t know if people realize this, but Atlanta made a last-ditch effort at keeping Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta and preventing him from leaving to the 49ers. . . And he thought about it.

Obviously, Shanahan chose to leave the comfort of Dan Quinn, Matt Ryan and Julio Jones for the unknown but Atlanta made a push to keep him, the way Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick allegedly talked McDaniels out of the Colts job to remain as offensive coordinator in New England.

One could only imagine how the Falcons would have fared had Shanahan stayed in Atlanta this season. Perhaps a decline was inevitable, but it’s hard to believe his presence wouldn’t have helped.
