Packers S Morgan Burnett ranked as one of NFL's top 25 free agents

A preliminary list of free agents compiled by NFL.com has Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett included among the league’s top 25 players scheduled to be available when the new league year begins in March.

The top players on the list will surely change over the next two months as teams re-sign players or utilize other ways – such as the franchise tag – to remove players from free-agent pool. It also remains possible that the Packers will find common ground with Burnett and agree to a contract extension before the market opens.

As it stands now, Burnett is situated as the 24th best free agent available.

Gregg Rosenthal’s short description for Burnett: “A reliable starting safety whose value often was best seen when he was out of the lineup for Green Bay.”

It’s a fair summary.

Burnett played in 12 games for the Packers in 2017, tallying 68 tackles and a forced fumble while playing the fourth-most snaps on the defense. His impact plays were lacking (zero interceptions, zero sacks), but his value – not only as a leader on defense, but as a versatile chess piece – was magnified whenever he couldn’t be on the field.
