As a second-year pro, cornerback Chidobe Awuzie will be seeking a fresh start. Awuzie shined in his first season with the Dallas Cowboys after being selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Colorado. The problem was he didn’t have many opportunities to shine.
Awuzie played in parts of just 10 games with the Cowboys due to multiple reoccurances of a hamstring injuries that also affected his offseason. When he played, he was an exciting rookie. Maybe a new jersey number will help change his mojo, as he has ditched No. 33 in favor of No. 24.
Awuzie ended the season with an interception and forced fumble, and seven pass deflections. He played just 29.8 percent of all Dallas defensive snaps, 298, due to his injuries.
Now he has taken on a jersey worn by several different Cowboys. In recent years, it hasn’t carried much luck. Nolan Carroll wore 24 last season before being released, likely blocking Awuzie from the number in the beginning. For five years prior, that was Morris Claiborne’s number.
In the past though, some of the Cowboys best have donned the 24. Marion “The Barbarian” Barber ran roughshod over the league for half a decade in it.
