Jon Gruden reportedly wants Eagles job; Jeffrey Lurie has other ideas

Jon Gruden has a history of toying with the masses about a return to the NFL coaching ranks since his foray into broadcasting in 2009. He's said to have come close on several occasions, and Gruden's name inevitably is connected to the high-profile gigs that open up each offseason.

The Eagles are that team this year.

According to report by Philly.com, Gruden has informed Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie of his interest in the team's vacant head-coaching position. But Lurie hadn't anticipated Gruden's availability, Philly.com sources said, and thus far is lukewarm on hiring the former Buccaneers and Raiders coach.

It's an annual dance for Gruden, 52, who has said he considers his analyst role with ESPN's "Monday Night Football" to be "a lot like coaching." In 2014, Gruden signed a lucrative contract with the network through the 2021 season but has been known to publicly deliver mixed messages about a return that rarely equate to more than a bluff.
